Konichiwa Bitches

Day 1: Tokyo - 21/03/2013.

We arrived at Narita Airport at 7pm on Thursday the 21st of March. After a 9 hour flight and making our way through customs, we took the 90 minute airport bus to Shinjuku station which connected us to Harajuku Station. I highly recommend doing some research on how the train system works before jumping in the deep end like we did!

It was 9:30pm on a Thursday night and there were thousands of people weaving their way through Shinjuku Station. We managed to work out the train fair and what train to take despite everything being in Japanese! We also didn’t look very hard for any elevators so we had to climb about 4 sets of stairs to get to our platform with two heavy suitcases.

10 minutes later we arrived at Harajuku station and made our way to what we thought was our accommodation just off Takeshita street only to arrive and have a couple from Melbourne answer the door! Our hosts accidentally gave us the address to their studio that they also rent out. Whoops! Ok so back onto the main street to find a pay phone and call our hosts to get the right address.

Normally something like this would send me into a meltdown but fortunately it didn’t because the streets felt so safe and it’s a very easy city to navigate your way around. I felt safer walking around at night in Tokyo then I do in Brisbane.

We finally got to our accommodation which was only 5 minutes further down the road thank god because it was so cold, New York City winter cold!

Our hosts LP and John were amazing and super cool. Their apartment walls were covered in art, lights and beautiful wood.

We drank green and brown rice tea and went off for dinner at 10:30pm. We were so tired!!

They wanted to take us to a really good ramen place but they were closed so we went to a Chinese restaurant on our first night in Japan. We were off to a good start!!

Finally before settling into bed around midnight after a whole day of traveling we met the other couple staying in the apartment. Solveig and Anders, they were from Oslo, Norway. They were such lovely people who we later went out with for dinner and too many drinks and some karaoke but that is a whole other story!

P.s. Sorry if there are any spelling or grammar mistakes. I am fresh off the plan!

Next stop Japan!

We’re off again on another adventure over the seas, this time to Japan! We will be arriving just in time for spring which means beautiful cherry blossom and Hanami which pretty much translates to eating and drinking with your friends while watching the cherry blossoms bloom all around you!!

Cherry blossoms and all other things amazing that Japan has to offer aside I’m am pretty excited to plant myself in a cat cafe, yup a place where you pay to hang out with cats and drink coffee. Heaven.

We are off for 2 weeks from
The 21st of March starting in Tokyo. We are staying in Harajuku with a very cool Japanese couple who we found on Airbnb! They are graphic designers who have a ‘crazy’ cat!

Our next stop via train is Kyoto where we will spend 6 days in this gorgeous city. Kyoto is a great mix of culture and city! We tried to book a Ryokan or a place with Airbnb but because its spring everything is fully booked so hotel it is! :(

After Kyoto we will venture not too far to Osaka for 3 nights. I’ve seen some people say ‘if Lady Gaga was a city Osaka would be it’ hmm interesting!!! We aren’t night owls so we will see if we can handle this extravagant city!

On the last leg of our Japanese adventure we return to Tokyo for 4 nights before we fly back to Brisbane…boo.

I’m excited to experience Japanese culture, real sushi, Geisha’s, temples, cherry blossoms, giant robots, Harajuku girls, the shopping, Mt Fuji, fast trains, the history of Hiroshima, the people, capsule hotels and Hello Kitty!

Until next time Sayōnara!
