Day 1: Tokyo - 21/03/2013.
We arrived at Narita Airport at 7pm on Thursday the 21st of March. After a 9 hour flight and making our way through customs, we took the 90 minute airport bus to Shinjuku station which connected us to Harajuku Station. I highly recommend doing some research on how the train system works before jumping in the deep end like we did!
It was 9:30pm on a Thursday night and there were thousands of people weaving their way through Shinjuku Station. We managed to work out the train fair and what train to take despite everything being in Japanese! We also didn’t look very hard for any elevators so we had to climb about 4 sets of stairs to get to our platform with two heavy suitcases.
10 minutes later we arrived at Harajuku station and made our way to what we thought was our accommodation just off Takeshita street only to arrive and have a couple from Melbourne answer the door! Our hosts accidentally gave us the address to their studio that they also rent out. Whoops! Ok so back onto the main street to find a pay phone and call our hosts to get the right address.
Normally something like this would send me into a meltdown but fortunately it didn’t because the streets felt so safe and it’s a very easy city to navigate your way around. I felt safer walking around at night in Tokyo then I do in Brisbane.
We finally got to our accommodation which was only 5 minutes further down the road thank god because it was so cold, New York City winter cold!
Our hosts LP and John were amazing and super cool. Their apartment walls were covered in art, lights and beautiful wood.
We drank green and brown rice tea and went off for dinner at 10:30pm. We were so tired!!
They wanted to take us to a really good ramen place but they were closed so we went to a Chinese restaurant on our first night in Japan. We were off to a good start!!
Finally before settling into bed around midnight after a whole day of traveling we met the other couple staying in the apartment. Solveig and Anders, they were from Oslo, Norway. They were such lovely people who we later went out with for dinner and too many drinks and some karaoke but that is a whole other story!
P.s. Sorry if there are any spelling or grammar mistakes. I am fresh off the plan!
